INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY: Music's Most Successful Women

Today is International Women's Day.

While the music industry is dominated by men, the contributions of women can never be taken for granted.

Here are some of the most successful female performers:

Madonna- she has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and Guinness World Records certified her as the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She is the most successful solo artist in the history of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and holds the record for the most number-one singles by a female artist in Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Mariah Carey has the most number-one singles in America with 19.She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Supremes areAmerica's most successful vocal group with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

ABBA is the most successful pop group with female members. The Swedish four-piece has sold an estimated 385-million records worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Fleetwood Mac, also with two female members, are the second most successful band.

As for the most successful female rock singers, both Pat Benatar and Stevie Nicks have sold an estimated 30-million albums each worldwide. Joni Mitchell, while no longer a staple on rock radio, has sold 150-million albums worldwide.
