Add Timothy Hutton to the list of men accused by the #MeToo movement.Sera Johnston claims the Oscar winner raped her in 1983 when she was 14-years-old. According to a criminal complaint she filed against him with the Vancouver Police Department, he assaulted her while he was in town shooting the film, “Iceman.”
Sera claims that she was with two of her friends when Tim – who was in his 20s – invited them to his hotel room. Once there, he and his friend raped and assaulted her. The now 50-year-old Sera who thought she wouldn’t be believed credits the #MeToo movement for giving her the strength to come forward.
Tim is denying the allegations. In a statement, he claims he never met Sera, and called her story “fabricated,” with “patently false, scurrilous, and defamatory statements.” According to him, she tried to get him to pay her millions by threating to go to the press. He takes issue with BuzzFeed for actually publishing the story.
- “Today, BuzzFeed chose to publish Ms. Johnston’s false story. BuzzFeed knew the truth because they were provided with documented evidence. What’s really going on here is that Ms. Johnston’s extortion attempts failed. She then decided to follow through on her threat to go to the press with her false story. When I became aware of this, I went to the FBI, signed a sworn statement, and filed a criminal complaint against Ms. Johnston for extortion. I will not stop fighting to expose this story for what it is — a failed extortion attempt based on something that never happened.”
- A spokesperson for BuzzFeed says that they “unequivocally” stand by their reporting, citing interviews with the alleged victim, the account of a woman who was with her that evening, and five separate people who were told of the assault at the time.
