Jann Wenner is out of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation after making recent comments regarding Black and female musicians. The “Rolling Stone” co-founder issued an apology soon after the release of his comments, but it wasn’t enough to keep him on the Hall’s board of directors.
“I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that (desired) level,” said Wenner in an interview with the New York Times published late last week. He was referring to women musicians like Joni Mitchell and Black artists like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. The comment was in response to being asked why Wenner excluded artists from both groups in his new book, “The Masters.”
“I made comments that diminished the contributions, genius, and impact of Black and women artists and I apologize wholeheartedly for these remarks,” wrote Wenner in a statement. The author attempted to explain that he actually meant “to reflect the high points of my career and interviews I felt illustrated the breadth and experience in that career.” In addition to leading “Rolling Stone” before retiring in 2019, Wenner co-founded the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
